You hear as it happens

Poplin tells you as each of these happens:

  • Money arriving, with a heads-up when a bank transfer is on its way and hasn’t landed yet.
  • A payment you send, and a payment that couldn’t be sent.
  • A new device on your account.
  • A new payee, or a change to a saved one.

Poplin also tells you when it needs details only you can give, such as a few more for verification, if the request has been left waiting with nobody working on it.

These come by email and land in the inbox in the app. Push and Telegram reach you only once they’re set up, so until then nothing pushes and nothing goes to Telegram:

  • Push is set for each device. Turn on “Alerts on this device” in the app and allow notifications when your browser asks. On an iPhone or iPad, add Poplin to your Home Screen first.
  • Telegram needs connecting to your account.

Once they are, money arriving, a new device, a new payee, a payment waiting for your approval, a request for more details and a reply from support push to your phone by default. A payment you send never pushes, and neither does one that couldn’t be sent. Telegram carries money, security, approvals, verification and support by default.

A push notification shows on your lock screen no more than each alert needs. A payee alert says a payee was added, never who or to which bank. A device alert gives the rough device, such as Safari on iOS, and the country it was added from. A payment received says how much and the sender’s name, when there is one, and marks that name as unverified when it came with the transfer rather than from Poplin. Telegram messages carry more: a payee message names the payee and who added them.

Approval requests go only to the owners who can approve; see team accounts. What the people you pay are told is on contacts.

Some alerts can’t be switched off

The emails for security, account security and verification can’t be switched off. They include:

  • A new device added to your account, or one removed.
  • Your account being recovered.
  • A new payee, or a change to a saved one.
  • A payment, or a change to your account, made outside the app.
  • A change to your business’s notification email.
  • An AI assistant connected to your account.
  • “We need a few more details”, when verification needs something from you.

That’s so nobody who got into your account can silence the alert that would tell you. Only the email is locked: you can still turn off push and Telegram for these alerts.

Locked means no one can switch the email off, not that it can’t go astray. If an email to an address bounces permanently, or it’s reported as spam, that address stops getting Poplin’s email, these alerts included.

Nothing you didn’t ask for

Once push and Telegram are set up, only the urgent kinds interrupt you by default. They’re on for money, security, approvals, verification and support, and off for team, contacts and account changes such as closure, which come by email and to the inbox.

  • Every switch that isn’t locked can be turned off, kind by kind, for email, push and Telegram. Each person sets their own, and the settings for an account’s payments and team are set for that account.
  • Reminders to finish setting up come at most three times for each step, never closer than two days apart. Each one has a link to stop them all.

The inbox in the app is the record. Every alert about your money and your account lands there too, and the inbox has no off switch, so muting a channel never loses one. Setup reminders aren’t kept there, and nor are a few one-off emails, such as the one confirming a passkey was set up.

A finance inbox for your business

A business account has one notification email. An owner sets it and confirms it with a one-time code, and it starts out as the email of whoever created the account.

Change it to a separate shared inbox, such as your finance team’s or your bookkeeper’s, and that inbox gets its own email copy of payment notices, new and changed payees, payments or changes made outside the app, and closure notices. Those copies go alongside each teammate’s own email, whatever anyone’s switches say. While it’s still a teammate’s own address there’s no separate copy, and that teammate’s switches decide.

Every owner is told when the notification email changes. It’s for business accounts only: on a personal account, notices go to your own email.

Notifications — FAQ

Can I turn off Poplin’s emails?

Yes, kind by kind, except the emails for security, account security and verification, which can’t be switched off. Everything else, such as team, contacts and support replies, you can turn off by email, push and Telegram separately. Alerts about your money and your account still land in the app’s inbox, so turning an email off never loses one.

Why can’t I switch some alerts off?

So that nobody who gets into your account can silence the alert that would tell you. The emails for a new device, account recovery, a new or changed payee, and a payment or change made outside the app can’t be switched off. Only the email is locked: you can still turn off push and Telegram for those alerts.

Do I get push notifications on an iPhone?

Yes, once you add Poplin to your Home Screen. Push is set for each device: after that, turn on “Alerts on this device” in the app and allow notifications when asked. Money arriving, new devices, new payees and payments waiting for your approval then reach your lock screen. Telegram is separate and needs connecting.

Can our bookkeeper get a copy of payment notifications?

Yes, on a business account. An owner changes its notification email to a separate shared inbox, such as your bookkeeper’s, and confirms it with a code. That inbox then gets its own email copy of payment, payee and closure notices, and of payments or changes made outside the app, whatever anyone’s switches say. Every owner is told when it changes.

Will I be told if a payment I send can’t be sent?

Yes. If a payment can’t be sent, you’re told it didn’t go through, and so is everyone else on the account, by email, in the app and in a linked Telegram chat. No money left your account, and you can try again. It doesn’t come as a push notification, so look for the email or the inbox in the app.
