Pay people without the “did you send it?” messages.
Keep everyone you pay in one place. They hear when your money is on its way, and when it lands.

One contact, every way to pay them
A contact is a person or business you pay. It keeps all their bank accounts, in different countries and currencies, along with their Poplin account if they have one, and the ways to reach them: an email address, a phone number or a Telegram handle.
You don’t have to save someone first. You can pay a bank account directly and save the person afterwards. For where you can send, see global payouts.
They know when the money’s coming
When you pay someone’s bank account, they’re emailed along the way:
- “Money is on its way to you” when the payment is underway.
- “You’ve been paid” when it lands, with the amount in their currency, their bank’s name and the last four digits of the account. Or “This payment didn’t go through”, which goes only to someone who was told the money was coming, so no one is left waiting for money that isn’t on its way.
- These emails need an email address saved on the contact, and “Email them a receipt when you pay them” switched on for that contact. You can change that on each payment.
- Forgot to switch it on? A “send receipt” button on a finished payment sends one afterwards.
- Paying a Poplin account is simpler: the money lands in seconds and is free, and they’re told in Poplin.
- Updates to someone you pay by bank transfer go by email only. Your own account can also be notified in a linked Telegram chat.
- The “on its way” email also invites them to join Poplin, in case they’d like their next payment in seconds.
Bring them onto Poplin
Add a contact by email, phone number or Telegram handle. If they’re already on Poplin, the contact links to their account. If not, you can invite them.
- By email, Poplin sends the invite and up to three reminders. The invite expires after 14 days.
- By phone number or Telegram handle, you share the invite yourself, on WhatsApp or Telegram or as a copied link. Poplin never messages a stranger’s phone or handle itself.
- When they join, the contact links up. You’re told, and so are they.
Your saved payees can’t be quietly changed
When a payee is saved, everyone on the account is alerted. When a way to pay or reach a saved payee is added or changed, whether a bank account, an email address, a phone number or a Telegram handle, they’re alerted again. The alert arrives by email, push notification, in the app and in a linked chat.
Swapping a payee’s bank details is a common fraud. This way no one on your account can do it without everyone else being told.
The alert is for saved payees. A bank account you pay directly, without saving the person, raises the ordinary payment notice for everyone on the account instead. For the rest of how Poplin protects your account, see security.
The small things
- Tags, such as Vendor or Payroll. Add up to 8 to a contact, and the first is shown as the primary.
- Your own accounts are pinned at the top, for moving money between them.
- Save someone right after you’ve paid them, if you didn’t before.
- One shared contact book for everyone on a business account.
Contacts — FAQ
Do I have to save someone as a contact to pay them?
No. You can pay a bank account directly and save the person afterwards, if you want to. Saving keeps all their bank accounts and ways to reach them in one place, and means everyone on your account is alerted when a way to pay them is added or changed.
Does the person I pay need a Poplin account?
No. You can pay someone’s bank account whether or not they have Poplin, and they’re emailed along the way if you’ve saved their email address and left receipts on for them. A payment between two Poplin accounts lands in seconds and is free. If they’re not on Poplin yet, you can invite them from their contact.
Can I stop Poplin emailing someone I pay?
Yes, you can stop the payment emails. Switch off “Email them a receipt when you pay them” on their contact and they aren’t emailed about your payments, or change it on any single payment. You can still send them a receipt afterwards, with the “send receipt” button on a finished payment.
What does the person I pay see?
Two emails when you pay their bank account: “Money is on its way to you”, then “You’ve been paid”, with the amount in their currency, their bank’s name and the account’s last four digits. They need an email address saved on their contact, and receipts switched on. The first email also invites them to join Poplin.
Is the person I pay told if a payment doesn’t go through?
Yes, if they were told the money was coming. Someone who got the “on its way” email then gets “This payment didn’t go through”, so they’re never left waiting for money that isn’t coming. Someone who was never told the money was coming isn’t emailed.
